click, click, Ding

My very first memories of the lab involved these thingies.

My Mom was a Med Tech who worked call and sometimes she would bring me along if my Dad was buzy farming and couldn't keep an eye on me. They are pretty fun toys for a kid....you press down the little red buttons click, click and when you turn the knob on the side it makes the greatest little ding ding ding sound.

Now, that I know what they were used for I am sure my Mom didn't quite the same affinity for them. Can you imagine 30 years ago having to count out every single differential (for those of you that don't know what a differential is it's a blood smear that is stained and looked at under a micoscope, 100 White blood cells are counted and differentiated) Technology now allows us to use an analyzer based on the Coulter Principle that reads the size of cells with a apperature or flow cell.
